A primordial putrescence powers Cannibal Corpse’s still jaw-dropping and retch-inducing debut album. Written at the tail end of the Eighties, Eaten Back to Life is Corpse at their thrashiest, though the band’s first full-length still needles towards the extremity of the death-metal icons’ future sound. It’s a vital splatter of razor-wire guitar riffs, jackhammered snares and ludicrously grotesque gutturals from early vocalist Chris Barnes. Comprising serial killer fantasies, murderous malpractice and necrophilic tendencies, the lyrics remain some of metal’s most shocking moments ever. Not for the faint of heart, Eaten Back to Life remains a disturbing death-metal classic.
